From 4th February until 8th February, 1916, the 9th Rifle Brigade battalion of 42 Brigade, 14th Division were in the trenches near Elverdinghe. All the trenches were in a very bad condition and the front line consisted of a series of isolated posts. The enemy snipers and machine-guns were very active throughout this period and as a consequence 9th Rifle Brigade suffered 12 casualties. One of these was Frederick Asbury who was killed on 5th February.
